Magazine Cover Art

mag150

We’ve had the great pride and pleasure of having Bulletstorm art be on the front page on several of the world’s biggest magazines. It always feels amazing, but in a way it’s a shame to cover up such pretty pictures with text, so I thought I’d share with you some of the art pieces, in their original form and let one of our artists explain the process.

What’s been seen…

Once about a time, there was a very buggy game that was nowhere near being finished.

During the development of Bulletstorm I’ve (and many others) been grabbing screenshots and videos every now and again when fudged up stuff happens. There’s way too much for me to show everything at once, but I thought I’d share a few of the random screenshots.

An awkward job

Butt

Remember that Bulletstorm “Bulletpoints” promo video with Cliff Bleszinski, where he goes “Grandpa always told me that I can do anything if I set my mind to it, so I made a game where you can blow up a man’s asshole”?

Yeah. That’s not ALL you can do that man’s bodypart.

Even Skulls Can Fly

pcf_logo_skull150

I always thought the People Can Fly logo is kind of “old school”.

It doesn’t really have anything to do with Bulletstorm, because it was created way before we started this project. I thought I’d try and make something interesting with it, using the animation Arcade wanted me to record a few months ago.

At first it was just supposed to be a looping animated .gif image for forums. Just for fun. The .avi is kind of a side effect… because our Audio Director Adam saw it and then he added sounds, and now it looks like a beginning of some bigger logo movie.

Life of a Level Designer (Pt.1)

This is how it looks behind the scenes.

When somebody asks me what I do, I try to explain it in a few simple sentences. “I design levels, I place walls, enemies etc”. In return I usually hear “Wow! That’s a great job, you are playing for a whole day and you get paid for it“. Ehhh… both statements don’t represent how it really is.

It’s easy to imagine that making a level is a piece of cake. What’s difficult about putting in a few walls, placing some enemies, adding dialogues, cutscenes or an event like a dragon riding a sledge? A day’s work and tadam! I’m drinking beer, playing my super mega marvelous level, delighted how it came out, knowing players will be exited when they play it. Honestly, it’s a shame that this couldn’t be further from the truth…

Don’t get me wrong. I love my job and I don’t see myself anywhere else, but I assure you it’s no picnic and nothing like you imagine. You want to know why? Read on.

Swedish Rotten Fish

surstromming150

Surströmming, a Swedish ”delicacy” that is rotten fish.

I’m a Swede, so when our concept artist John heard about me going to Sweden for a visit he asked me about this phenomenon and asked me to get him some to try out.

Of course, knowing how terrible it smells and how disgusting its taste is; I gladly helped out!

He had no idea what he was in for…

Thanks for Playing

anarchy_session_150

The ”Game With Dev” event was an interesting experience. It all started with a bit of chaos here at PCF because of technical problems, but after a while we got it working somewhat and we got the chance to play with some fans on all three platforms.

It was awesome and it was all thanks to you!

Celebrity for a day

I’ll be honest. For most of us developers, making video games is very much an occupation of the recluse. Hunched over monitors in dimly lit rooms, we generally eat takeaways and communicate to each other using Internet speak, having limited contact with the outside world.

The glamorous life of TV interviews, driving Lamborghinis and wining and dining with the press is something most of us have no exposure to. At least, not usually…

The other week, out of the blue I got an email from Adrian the Creative Director asking if I could attend a community event in Paris in place of him. A couple of days off work to go and eat baguettes and watch some people play Bulletstorm? Sounds good to me!

Oh how wrong I was.

Event – Game with Devs

gamewithdevs150

Hey, I got some great news!

A bunch of us developers will be playing Bulletstorm online in Anarchy Mode this Saturday (March 12th) and we want to play with you. I’m going to be one of the players for example. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing.

Developers from both People Can Fly and Epic will make sure to be online and play with the fans for a few hours to Kill With Skill.
