Like Military Shooters

One thing that makes me sad is when people think they won’t like Bulletstorm because they like Military Shooters. Nothing could be further from the truth. You will most likely find the stuff you know and love in your favorite Military Shooter in Bulletstorm as well. And then some!

People talking about Bulletstorm sometime say stuff like “Bulletstorm is not like an ordinary Military Shooter”, but that doesn’t mean it’s not for you if you’re a fan of such games. It just means that you can’t look at any of those games and say “That’s all I get when I play Bulletstorm.”

In fact, if you like “shooters” of any kind (military or not) there’s a big chance that you might love Bulletstorm.

Let’s look at what they provide and then let’s look at Bulletstorm.

All of the big military shooters out there are basically based on you moving around, taking cover and using projectile based weapons to take out humanoid (two legs, two arms, a body and a head) enemies, all whilst keeping track of your ammo and trying not to die.

So, it’s the same as in our game.

Bang Bang Bang!

Prefer using automatic rifles and other “realistic” stuff? Then stick to the PMC and the Screamer.

Want to duck behind cover, stand up and pop a few shots in the head of an enemy? Then be my guest, we have plenty of cover in Bulletstorm. The enemies use them, and so should you.

Do you feel that the Leash and the Kick detracts from your ideal FPS experience? Then don’t use them. We don’t force you to. They’re just extra tools of destruction if you chose to use them.

Do you feel that the Skillshot-system seems too overwhelming and doesn’t sit well with you? Then you can just go into the Options, turn off the Skillshot HUD and don’t pay attention to it. In a way, this makes for an even more visceral experience.

Heck, pretty much everyone here loves the “regular” games you’re thinking off and the things that are appealing in those games, are in Bulletstorm as well. And we’re letting you play it the way you see fit. Now, I personally love sliding up to an enemy, kick him in the face and then shoot him in the ass to get the “Rear Entry” Skillshot, but even if that doesn’t sound like what you’re after, you should give Bulletstorm a chance.

And furthermore, gameplay aside; What is with you like with Military Shooters? Is it the Military? Because, y’know, Gray (the guy you play as) is actually ex-Military from the Dead Echo Squad. But seeing how our game is Pulp Sci-Fi, it’s a modern future look of the Military.

Or do you like all those cool Blockbuster moments? We sure have blockbuster moments!

Now, as a final attempt in this post to convince you that liking Military Shooters is NOT a reason to NOT play Bulletstorm, Rafal over at Quality Assurance helped me out by recording this video of him playing Bulletstorm the traditional way. And it’s still fun, challenging and rewarding!

See, the thing is, that demo really made a lot of people shy away from Bulletstorm. There are more than a few out there that thought score attack Echoes would be the whole game. The rest felt that it took way to many bullets to kill your enemies, and even more just didn’t like the over the top attitude of the characters they were introduced to. I myself like CoD, as it is a highly functional shooter, but I like bulletstorm for entirely different reasons.

At the end of the day, begging for people to play Bulletstorm doesn’t really suit PCF, or you, Arcade. But hey, at least it’s not as bad as the “Your mom hates Dead Space 2″ campaign… Just wait until word spreads that it is a fucking sweet game and then the people who passed it up the first time will HAVE to play it.

      I agree fully with this.
The blog posts and then the demo reinforced into me that the whole game campaign would just be focused on trying to kill each and every enemy for extra points.

      It really turned me off.
This blog post made me realise that I could be wrong about the game just being about points. But it is too far ingrained in me that I’m probably going to be picking up a bunch of other games before this one.

I’ve got Gears of war 1 & 2. so it’s not that I don’t like this style of game. Just that the points system turned me off.

Sounds like a bail out.We like thats it different from ordinary FPS..

  3. SuperXCM February 15, 2011 at 7:53 pm #

You don’t need to do it, the strength of Bulletstorm is to be different, I love COD (not MW 2.. this game was a joke), but I love the small part I had chance to play with Bulletstorm Demo, excactly because it was different, it’s addictive, fun, and definitely release the stress… You’re doing an amazing job and it doesn’t need this explanation.

    • SuperXCM February 15, 2011 at 7:55 pm #

I mean it’s still great that you put the option to remove the Skillshot HUD.

      • sam February 16, 2011 at 5:38 am #

The skillshot hud is good for singleplayer but I would turn it off for the multiplayer.

  4. Adrian February 15, 2011 at 7:57 pm #

It’s not a bail out, and it’s not begging. It’s just respect and information.

Or just Arcade being very, very sneaky… Luring in the poor souls… Because believe me, I know it firsthand, even if you TRY and REALLY WANT TO play it as a regular FPS, very quickly you get addicted to kicking and leashing and Skillshotting – AND THERE IS NO GOING BACK.

    • Pedro Amorim February 15, 2011 at 8:56 pm #

As I was watching the video I was thinking.. c’mon kick the guy!!! oh ok, you didn’t.. how aabout that one? USE THE LEASH USE THE LE.. oh ok.. you’re saving it for later, gotcha..

Mannn, what a boring way to play this game! This game is all about going balls out on your enemies. Fuck cover! Kick them in the teeth and blow their asses off! ahah

      • Adrian February 15, 2011 at 8:58 pm #

That’s the thing. I was thinking the very same. And y’all will be thinking it when you play a regular shooter after Bulletstorm ;) ))

    • Conor February 15, 2011 at 9:35 pm #

Still, it kind of seems like you’re preaching (a bit desperately) to a group that constantly shies away from anything that doesn’t involve n00b tubes and warfare so modern that knives are capable of cutting through anything. They don’t want Bulletstorm–and it’s doubtful that Bulletstorm exactly promotes a CoD-style of gameplay as opposed to a “implale three suckas at once on a cactus” style of gameplay.

  5. Gerardo February 15, 2011 at 8:38 pm #

if they make a demo for pc they doesnt need to do this kind of explanation…… ;)
    sorry bad english…

  6. Adam February 15, 2011 at 8:46 pm #

I’m trading in all 3 of my military shooters the day Bulletstorm comes out and I’m not looking back! SKILLSHOTS FTW!

  7. Doug Montgomery February 15, 2011 at 8:48 pm #

Pssh, tell them to buy Call of Duty games then. Bulletstorm to me, is a better, grungier version of Borderlands, and I’m all for it! Do your thing guys, and thanks for taking a moment to write this article for us.

I dont care if its real or not, I want a rainbow cououred leash

  12. Greybeard February 15, 2011 at 11:10 pm #

Not a big fan of military shooters but no probs with them either. However, until a few years back I was a sniper/sneaker/camper kinda player. Dammit, I even camped my way through Painkiller :) Then I picked up a little game by some ex-colleagues of yours called NecroVisioN (can I say that here?). Suddenly, I was charging into hordes of enemies with a shovel and my boot :D Now, I punch my way through Borderlands and Power Fist my way through New Vegas.

If anyone is thinking of playing Bulletstorm like CoD or whatever, I implore you to forget all the stuff you’ve learnt and just get up close and personal with Boot, Leash and the most outrageous weapon you can lay your hands on. You could find a whole new way of enjoying shooters. I did and I know how I’m going to play Bulletstorm :D

  14. Arcade February 15, 2011 at 11:41 pm #

Haha, I love these comments. “You don’t have to do this.”.
As Adrian said; all I’m asking is that everyone try the game. :)

    • SuperXCM February 16, 2011 at 7:15 pm #

They will have too! We were fighting at home to play the demo! It’s addictive. And I think the marketing campaign and the blog is doing great, the stuff you are sharing are great, and (to have been part of the video game industry a few years I thank you) it helps people who don’t know to see all the work that has to be done to arrive at a good result.
The thing is when I said you don’t have to do this, it means already everyone wants to play the game and the one who don’t want, don’t want more by principle, but wait a little that they see somebody having fun with it, they won’t resist. Now of course there is always people, and maybe again by principle, who will complain that it’s not military accurate or it’s not like a COD, and refuse to play it, but these kind of guy even if you force them to play, or trick them to play, they will say they don’t like just by principle.
      There is a**hole everywhere…
For me, I really can’t play the demo like a reel shooter, I just want to kill them with style :) , I would have to force myself to play it like I would play a COD. And it will probably be boring after a while… because the thing is that your game is not! I repeated the demo again and again, I just couldn’t stop!

You have the chance (if we can call that chance-maybe more the good work), that your game is INSANELY addictive…

You got a great game on the way, and did amazing job so far and I think every gamers will want to try it, and get hook! ;)

PS : Still I think good idea to be able to remove the HUD. :)

  15. diebuster February 16, 2011 at 12:33 am #

I have no doubts that the game is still challenging and rewarding if you play it like a traditional military shooter, but I think the issue here is that it’s possibly not going to feel as *polished* as games that FOCUS on realistic military warfare. So if someone is looking for their military shooter fix, I think it would make more sense that they would rather go for, well… a standard military shooter. Bulletstorm, on the other hand, is a game whose main draw from the get-go has been its overall disregard for modern FPS trends in order to try something new. Its marketing mirrors this perfectly.

Just for the record I’m totally looking forward to this release and I actually DISLIKE realism in games… I’m just playing the devil’s advocate here!

    • body wash 77 February 16, 2011 at 6:46 am #

i toatly argee if you want realistic and and polished games dont play bulletstorm but if you want to have fun and kill with skill play one of the best sounding crazy games i have ever heard of i have pre ordered it and cant wait!!!

  16. Jokerino February 16, 2011 at 11:23 am #

If it’s different? I like it, I played the demo and thoroughly enjoyed it, was a blast, can’t wait for the full game in fact.

  17. sabasNL February 16, 2011 at 3:40 pm #

Altough I wasnt going to play this like a ”normal” (aka boring shit) FPS, this still made one thing sure for me: I HAVE TO BUY IT NAW!

    • Arcade February 17, 2011 at 12:25 pm #

I’m happy to hear that! :)

Do you know that day when you come home after hard day work and youst want to kick something because you are pissed.
You turn on your PC or console and look for a game in that you could find comfort, and then you figure out that tere isnt one at all.
I youst want to say that games like bulletstorm are very rare.
Simple game where you dont need to think where you can hide or ambush your enemy. You youst go and kill em.
To me its pointless to play this like military shooter because it isnt. This game is for fun not for breaking your keyboard and mouse on a table because you cant finish a mission,
and the best game with who could compare with bulletstorm is serious sam.If you liked serious sam you will like bulletstorm.
I have PC so I didnt try a demo but i like it and this kind of game is youst what we needed.

  19. Wolfos February 16, 2011 at 5:49 pm #

There’s seriously people that only like military shooters and no other games? Not only are they missing out, they also have no taste.

    • SuperXCM February 16, 2011 at 7:16 pm #

      I agree with you wolfos… it’s sad…:/

  20. Julio February 16, 2011 at 7:57 pm #

I love shooters (military, horror, etc), but when I saw a demo of this game (the one that ends showing a giant mythic monster with weird name) the only thing that caught my attention was the four-barrel shotgun. I watched it to fill my time, didn’t really paid attention, and then it seemed like any other shooter. Even the leash (energy whip) disn’t pulled me into it because I thought
it’d make it too easy. Because of that first impression I didn’t watch any of the later videos.

But later on, a light showed up in the dark, I’ve got nothing to do, then another demo from Bulletstorm crossed my way and I gave it another try. That one pulled my attention. I watched the other videos, and when I saw the “fire in the hole” skillshot … well, Bulletstorm went right to my wishlist.
This whole “I don’t like this, I like military shooters” shit makes me sick!

I never liked the points system, but this is different, this is new, this is fucking AWESOME!!!
This is Bulletstorm, son of a dick !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • body wash 77 February 17, 2011 at 6:27 am #

all those things you just said julio is so fucking true this is bullet storm the game were you can do alsorts of harsh crazy shit and get rewarded with points so if you dont find bulletstorm interesting and unrealistic get a fucking life it dosen’t have to be perfect it just has to be bullet storm.

  21. Bulletstorm Fan February 22, 2011 at 6:14 am #

This game is going to open a can of Crazy Woop Ass. Time to rack up those exp points.

  22. SkillshotsFTW March 23, 2011 at 2:35 pm #

LOL,i really hate people ho say”BulletStorm sucks,Call of Duty the greatest game” these kind of comments are making me sick!I like playing BulletStorm with Kick and Leash+SkillShot HUD and the HUD doesnt annoy me.I even spend my entire holiday, trying to do all 131 skillshots, not like millitary. But thats only CoD fans s opinion,i like millitary shooters too,but BulletStorm is the KING of combat. And in the mean time,CoD Modern Warfare 2 servers are FULL of players, while in Anarchy there is no one, possibly 1-2 people, waiting for someone to join, but nothing, everyone are playing MW2.But otherwise, thanks for doing such a great game!
