Oh, Nuts!

Most people have dreams. Sometimes those dreams are shooting people in their private parts. Sometimes these dreams are possible to realize. PCF is a place where our dreams come true.

It all started with one simple, but extremely funny idea: if you shoot a guy in the sack, he should meet his maker. From then on, it just got better… or worse depending on how you look at it.

Greetings! I’m Markus (but lots of people here call me “Metal” for some reason), yet another Swede, an animator at People Can Fly. My work basically means that I make things come alive through movement. But today, I would like to talk about something that drove me NUTS! (in a good way).

It all started with us doing the animations for this “feature,” which was sort of bizarre to begin with. I mean, trying to convey movement from the feeling of losing your precious one is a bit odd, yet interesting and fun.

When we first implemented it in the game, we felt that something was not quite right. Sure, it was fun to shoot enemies in the nuts and watch them go down on their knees to perish a moment later from the pain, but there was still something missing.

Then our Creative Director Adrian and our Lead Animator Jakub got a really brilliant idea: finish the guy off by killing him while on his knees! And better yet, kill him by kicking his head off! Since the guy is just in front of you on his knees, in pure agony. You just want to finish him off and relieve him of his misery.

This was an instant enjoyment-explosion. It got ten times funnier and more awesome to shoot people in the groin. But there was STILL something missing. It still didn’t feel quite right. Executing this lovely move didn’t satisfy our über-sadistic hunger just yet. And then we realized what’s wrong. The look of agony, the literal one. The face. Eyes filled with terror. Mouth screaming pain.

So the idea came up to add facial expressions, and of course sound to this spectacle. To get that extra push of torture and pain that we all love and live for. And BEHOLD ze end result! This is, for sure, one of my personal favorite skillshots.
