I asked a few journalists what is it that the readers of their magazines ask them the most. The answer, I have to say, surprised me.

I expected “give me the scoop on the games no one even knows exist” or “review everything” or “please include a poster of Trishka in revealing clothes.” I know I would ask for just that. But no, what readers usually ask for is the inner workings of gamedevelopment.

Because we care

Okay, so we do not do everything by the text book. Guilty as charged. Truth is, however, that virtually any project of Bulletstorm’s scale will have changes and improvements being implemented until the very last moment… and then some more. This is exactly what occurred to one of the levels I’ve been working on. A particular area underwent a major last minute change and what follows is an uneasy path that we went through.

My name is Jakub Kisiel and I’m the Lead Animator here at PCF.

Many of my friends ask me what do I actually do at work. They know I’m an animator, but they are curious how do I make the characters move. They just see the end result – a moving character that walks, runs, covers, shoots and.. well.. dies in a horrible (but fun) way.

What does an animator actually do when he sits all night, clicking with his mouse and staring at the monitor? Well, here you go! I’ve recorded a short video showing how Bulletstorm animations are created from start to finish.

Most things do not explode. For example, you can shoot a car, but it won’t explode. Electronic equipment doesn’t blow up as well. But that’s “boring” real life. In game development we tend to go in the opposite direction, and that’s a good thing.

E3 in Los Angeles was huge for People Can Fly this year. It was the first time we let people put their sweaty hands on the controller and dive into the Bulletstorm experience.
